IPB Converter?

edited October 2006 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I'm considering switching over my IPB 2.0.4 boards to Vanilla. Are there any converters that can bring over my members and posts?

  • Not for IPB. I keep saying i'll do one and then it escapes my mind and i forget as i run out to work. What you can do at present is to convert to phpBB and then to vanilla using my migrator. Or write your own :D
  • Where is your migrator? I might as well take the IPB -> phpBB -> Vanilla route, just gotta make sure to backup.
  • Well, the sticking point for converting from Invision (One of my forums uses it, another uses SMF), for me at least, is that there isn't a way to quote posts, and no signatures. I'd write extensions for these features in Mark's "latest version" (since I heard it was possible to do that in another thread), but right now, that's preventing me from switching, or writing the code to make the switch. If I can't get a copy of the latest version, I may try to modify the current version, but I don't want to have to redo everything when the alpha of 1.0 finally appears.
  • http://gez.int0rw3b.com/migrator.zip ... a little rusty but most people who have used it have got the right output in the end - it depends what your phpBB database is like. Give me a shout if you need a hand.

    Thanks minisweeper :)

Louis: there is a quote extention in the works, atleast that's what I hear from this thread:

As far as signatures, I always found ginormous and ugly 800x600 images after every frickin post incredibly annoying.

EDIT: Just realized that Vanilla really needs a preview option...Not all of us are so good with markdown :P

  • I hate them myself, but until I can work out a better way to let my community's members express themselves creatively, they'll have to do. I was thinking perhaps of doing something like MSN Messenger 7's custom background images, let everyone make their own watermark or post background / colour, with a small text sig for links and such. Again, this would make a good extension.
  • Have there been any more developments in switching from IPB to Vanilla?

I've wanted to write a generic, all-purpose database migrator for a long time, but I just don't have the time. I hope I can do it someday.
  • I hope so too. :) I wish it was something I had the ability to do, but design is more my forte. Maybe I will try the idea from above - converting to phpbb first and then to vanilla.
  • !BUMP! Any news on this ?
