Using Short-URL with redirect?

Just thought about if it would be possible to use a different Domain (lets say vnl.la as a short domain for vanillaforums.org) and attach the thread id to have a short url for forum threads in an vanilla forum.
Example:
http://vnl.la/37223 should automatically redirect to the thread with the thread id 37223.
That should be possible without bigger modifications, right? Should even be possible with a simple .htaccess or do we need to know the thread title to redirect?
Showing this short url below or above a thread should be possible with some small template modifications?
(sorry if that all sounds stupid but i'm really new to vanilla forums and i'm still theoretical so far.)
