I made a bunch of changes to the repository today. I don't think it should change your error, but do an update anyway and see if it does. I'm a little lost without seeing the error myself.
i tried using the new version and no luck. given the unforseen db changes you made recently mark, i've decided to go with 0.9.2 and upgrade to version 1.0 when it's ready.
just an aside:
phpbb is the WORST forum out there - so many security holes... i'd advise against using it.
use the latest stable vanilla (0.9.2.6) and you'll be ok. Don't use the beta if you're worried about hacks.
I'm new here and i am also wondering myself on what are the major diffrence between Vanilla and other open source forums out there? Is it from the feature from of view or it is in terms of security issues. Vanilla seems to be a nice forum to use but maybe i haven't found out the strongest point of it yet and i've yet to know what's hidding beneath this nice piece of tool.
The major difference is that it's a whole load more basic. This install has quite a few extensions on. Set yourself up a basic extensionless copy of vanilla and a standard phpBB/vB/whatever install and i think you'll start to notice the differences a little more. Also, vanilla lists discussions by default as opposed to categories, which i suppose is the biggest user difference between the two.
Ofcourse, if the differences were too large, vanilla wouldnt be a forum. Strip everything back to the basics and it has to do what vanilla does, but it doesnt *have* to do all the stuff phpBB etc do. Which is whats new.
Thats a pretty poor explanation, really, but set yourself up a copy of each for a while and use them both. You'll soon see for youself which differences stand out and what the pros/cons(?!) are of the software.
It's a "vanilla" forum. It's meant to be featureless - but it gives you the ability to write as many wacky extensions for it as you want. On top of that, the few features that it *does* come with aren't really available in most other forums.
Little things like how it keeps track of everything you've read. It allows you to jump to the first comment you haven't read in a discussion, etc. These are features that you won't find on any other forums (yet) - or if you do, it's some kind of bastardized version based on cookies that is clunky and never quite works right.
In my mind, it is the little differences like this that make Vanilla special.
>cons(?!)
Well, it might be just me or something, but 0.9.2.* seemed to load a lot faster than .3...
EDIT: And the Opera wait thingy has yet to be fixed.

I might be wrong here, but after I post something from the discussion itself (not the edit page), it just sort of sits there until I refresh the page from the URL bar.
Wierd. I could have sworn I tested this and it worked fine. But now I see what you mean. Back to the drawing board, I guess.
(Your previewPost button doesn't seem to be working either, for the record)
I'd swear my computer's magical or something. I've got it working fine using the latest version of Firefox and Vanilla on my computer. Ah well, back to the drawing board...
