problem at installation

I downloaded vanilla-2.0.16 from this site, read the installation guide, follow the steps:
-create the database and the collation to utf8.
-uploaded the files from Vanilla folder to my site folder.
the only change i made was set the host, name, user e password in conf/config-defaults.php
and at the step 4, i got that 500 Internal Server Error.
any ideia?

    i dunno, i uploaded the folder from the download.
    only the 'vanilla' folder, not the _MACOSX
    where is this htaccess?

    It's a hidden file. It won't copy unless you use a program to show (and select) the file to copy to your webspace. On OSX I use the FTP client Tansmit. It has an option to show hidden files. Otherwise google for "osx show hidden files".

    Ok, i found the .htaccess file in local vanilla folder, but im trying to upload it, and it dont appear there. i dunno why

    Oh, i've configured the client to show hidden files, adn now i can see the htaccess there. but i still having this problem: (500 Internal Server Error)
