Other interesting forum software?

edited February 2007 in Vanilla 1.0 Help
I always like to see innovative stuff. Particularly interesting to me are forums that don't follow the general phpBB, vB, IPB mold, like Vanilla.

Any links?

Someone linked it before, but Meta has a lot of interesting features.

    aterr?
    Sylphagora?
bbPress? (although I have yet to get this to run properly...)
I dunno, just listing some of the more interesting forums I've run into.
  • Wow, aterr is very Vanilla-ish. Awesome links.

Thanks. Anyone else got any others?
  • i like the way on the aterr forum that you get a little snippet of the first post in a discussion before you click on it.
  • Heh, I'm Spiffeh over at the chimera (aterr) forums.

I have to admit that I'm shallow concerning web projects, If it doesn't look good, I rarely spend time examining it.
On that basis alone, Vanilla trumps all others.
  • i was amazed that the first so called 'feature' of the beehive forum was "Frame-based layout, for easy navigation"
  • PunBB is very fast. It's a classic forum, meaning no AJAX, no thrills, no nothing. But, it does what it was designed to do easy and fast. Vanilla seems to be very buggy and hard to customize. A theme is one css file. Furthermore, it outputs valid XHTML 1.0 Strict.
  • I'm right there with you Ben. It's amazing how none of these forums look half as good as this one. And as Vanilla is always working to improve customization and stability...something tells me the other forums aren't very interested in design.
  • while you're largely right when you say vanilla is very buggy (though i wouldnt say *very*), you must remember it is still a beta. The point of this entire community is to find and iron out bugs before it gets a v1 badge.

And i think people would disagree with you about it not being customisable. It just takes a bit of getting used to.
  • I just don't understand where SpookyET's comments even came from. There was no mention of PunBB and then BAM...
  • Wasnt it just another 'interesting forum software'?

The way he said it just came off as trolling to me. Maybe that wasn't his intention.

    BTW, aterr is damn hot.
  • I guess, i dont think so though. *shrug.
  • BTW, what font is aterr using? I can't seem to figure that out...
  • tahoma isnt it?
  • I was thinking that might be it.

Aterr looks a little cluttered to me, and I don't really like threadred systems. I guess if I wasn't planning on using Vanilla I'd use PunBB or IPB (don't kill me please).

A theme is one css file.

    Semantics, maybe - but that's not a theme, that's a style.

A theme involves changing the actual xhtml *and* the css.

And for the record, each theme in Vanilla only uses a single css file. For example, this vanilla style is http://lussumo.com/community/themes/vanilla/styles/default/css/vanilla.css
  • Punbb may be one of the better alternatives. One reason I didn't go for it was the limited possibility of themeing. You have limited control of output. When You look at punbb themes you won't find any that altered the basic layout substantially. They'll all have the same look and feel.
