  • Thanks Mark.
  • c-unit,
I know the whole 2.0 thing has a bit of a backlash against it. I do think there is some merit to it though as I've written on my blog in What is wrong with the web 2.0 moniker.

The reason why I think it is web 2.0 is that it is a different take on the whole bbPHP (or whatever they all are called) model.

I wrote a popular web forum back in 1995 in Perl, which was a lot more like what I'm doing now. I was always really annoyed of having to sign up for stuff.

I will be adding a blurb this weekend. This is definitely needed.
  • SirNot. I'm guessing it was you who tested it earlier. This is now fixed. Thanks.

pelle, I have no problem with the "Web 2.0" term, it's just that Conversation 2.0 leaves non-web-junkies wondering what you mean by 2.0. I notice you've changed it to conversation renaissance. Hmm.
  • I find talk.org to be interesting but what I didn't understand (at first) was the reversed post order. You need to read the first item, then scroll down to see the first reply at the bottom (just above the first post repeated), then work upward to get the more recent replies. I would only suggest going in chronological order since that is how blogs and other forums post replies... I do like how the most recent reply is posted on the discussion list... and I like the post types (shout, question, link, etc.) Found it intriguing and that is why I linked them together. It is a fresh (and different) perspective on forums--like Vanilla is.

Pelle, how do you guys handle spammers and jerks? And do people at least have the *option* of signing up? I hate posting anonymously because I like to be recognized for what I have said and I also like to know who is saying what. BTW, how did you get the talk.org domain? That seems like one that would be difficult to find available.
  • c-unit, the conversation renaissance seemed like a good idea after a couple of bottles of wine ;-), I'm not so sure now. I do need to think up a better title. Maybe no title at all actually.

WallPhone, The reversed post order is an experiment because people are used to this from blogs. However it maybe confusing to avid forum users. My software allows custom post types, which I will expand on later.

Jesusphreak, I actually just blogged about the spamming problem yesterday. I am working on various techniques to handle this. It's funny I used to have a blog on the domain. I still get a lot of comment spam comming in for that blog, so I am now capturing them in a "honey pot" which feeds my firewall.

One of the things I have implemented besides the above honeypot is a message throtling technique. You are only allowed to post one message per ip address per minutte.

I've had talk.org since the 90s. My plan back then was to take my original perl travel forum and expand on it. I just never had the time to do that.
  • Well pelle, thanks for your replies, they were insightful. I am looking forward to seeing how talk.org evolves, as it is somewhat similar to a project of my own that I intend to do one of these days. I also do hope you'll stick around the Lussumo forums because we have quite a few knowledgeable people around here and it would be good to hear your opinion on different things as well.
  • talk is very impressive indeed!
  • well ive been trying to find a cms or a blog engine that can integrate with phpbb or vanilla and i my only reaction is WTF! there are very few cms or blogging engines that can integrate with forum systems. i know swell and vanilla will but thats not going to happen for a bit, so can anyon explain this phenomenon. i was specifically looking for something where i could integrate the user registrations
  • For pelle (and anyone else who might be interested): I've never seen Talk.org before, but I've been playing with almost the same thing. An early version is available at http://rubyforge.org/projects/banani/ . It's also an anonymous message board with tagging (and not much else, as many forums are extremely bloated). A simple advice on the layout though: it would have been pretty nice and minimalistic if you hadn't used just about every light colour there is. Usually a simple colour scheme is best ( this forum is blue, white and orange for example ).
  • Amazon has discussions for some products. It took quite some time to find a product with more than one post in it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400079179/sr=1-2/qid=1144581430/ref=sr_1_2/102-0151836-4801752?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books#CustomerDiscussions
  • I remember a link to a forum being posted somewhere on the Lussumo forums, but I can't find it. I really thought it was in this tread, but it wasn't, and I can't find it anywhere else, so I'm hoping someone else can help me.

The forum I'm looking for, as I remember it, had a very minimalistic layout, it was almost completely black, with a few hover effects for discussions. I think it was a german forum, but I'm not completely sure. I know it's not much, but if anyone knows what I am talking about, please post a link here!
  • perhaps here? http://lussumo.com/community/discussion/956/
