How did you find vanilla?

  • I joined to the Story-Games forum. I liked the funcionality and the administrator said it was really easy to start a Vanilla forum.

Thus, I tested it with a small forum for a group of my students (I was teaching them XHTML and CSS, and I found really useful the Text:On/Off function for small examples in the posts ;-) Afterwards, I begun to like it not only the funcionality, but due to the way it was done.

After messing about with phpbb, punbb, smf, phorum et al, I ended taking another direction and got into Wordpress. Though it lacks a proper forum (even though some plugins have been developed). So while searching for solutions to integrate with a forum, Vanilla popped up. Then I remembered I had looked at Vanilla ages ago, but thought it too minimalist at that time. But now better understanding its philosophy and ahead of time 'web2.0' forum design (as well a many more extensions!), I'm sold on Vanilla :)
  • I don't remember. I remember hating phpbb because of all the spam bots and the hours that it took to edit the code to fix it (considering I had 4 boards up at that point). I was originally looking at the program that Wordpress was using for their support, but it was in its very early stages. Then I found vanilla and LOVED it. Everyone I showed it to HATED it. That was back before .9. But, I kept my eye on it. Then, when 1.0 came out, I started testing it out again and decided to go against popular belief and install Vanilla. First it was just one forum, then I installed it as the project manager. Then I installed it as all of my forums. People complained a bit, but now everyone likes it. Stupid naysayers : )

But I do not remember how I found it. But I'm glad I did.
  • I was looking for a forum that did not look like phpbb, and that was easily extensible. Seems Vanilla is the only one :s
  • I'm new to Vanilla but I'm quite impressed ! Someone on IRC told me about it when we were talking if an open-source dead-simple forum software or any simple working software in php existed ... He just said 'Get Vanilla' , at first I was confused .. asking myself .. what brought vanilla and food to php? then he pasted the link getvanilla.com and here I'm ...
