Posting to a discussion thread from outside Vanilla?

I'd like to be able to integrate a discussion and a "post to discussion form" on for example a WordPress post. The API only seems to be able to display/fetch records from discussions. Is there any way in which one can extend the API to also allow posting or how would you implement this functionality?

    I am also interested in this, though from the aspect of inbound email (i.e. an admin could email an alias to start a discussion).

    Not yet, but a little birdy told me this might be on the radar soon.
