Grokking the meaning of discussion count in profile on this forum

I am trying to understand the meaning of the number of discussion count
on the lefhand side of the page on this forum e.g. on this link
http://vanillaforums.org/profile/37259/H00j
as of now it says 1 discussion and 12 comments.
Before you answer the question automatically. count the number of initiated discussions and the number of comments. There must be some logic somewhere - but my illogical mind can't find a real pattern unless it means one discussion without a comment.
I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.

but I stick to my explanation of the difference between a discussion and the comments. Also look in the database tables. The discussions are in a separate table from the comments. I cannot explain the difference in discussion counts and actual discussions without making some silly assumptions, which I won't do.
In this case, the counts don't matter, the way we handle the newly posted discussions and some of the comments do.

A discussion is an actual discussion that you started yourself.
The comment count is the comments you made on discussions that you did not start yourself.
My profile is actually a good example : I usually comment on existing discussions instead of creating discussions myself:

No, just added the signature, too many ppl asking where to post their bugs, view their bugs, etc.
And it's time to promote the Vanilla Wiki some more :-)

Clarification - I meant discussion issue is probably a bug
the signature is great idea

Ah, it is a bug. That's hard to say.
If it's reproducable with a very clean install of Vanilla, sure it's a bug. In my opinion it's something that can be added to this list: http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/19639/how-about-a-fix-sheet-for-broken-features-on-vf-org
It's still something that can be looked into for the next version of Vanilla (or Vanilla 2.1, whichever comes first), to see if it's working exactly the way it was supposed to work.
