You are unable to provide a drop in replacement for recaptcha.
There are plugins that offer esoteric captchas. E.g. BotStop, Registration Restriction Logger, etc.

Perhaps, An eclectic mix of esotoric plugins could convey an expedient epehemeral satisfactory solution and forfend gobs of gratuitous spam
