Pre sales questions

hi guys,

i am looking for a forum and found vanilla forums, i got a few questions before i start to download or buy the system:

  1. what is the difference btw the hosted and the open source (in terms of features)?
    a. The paid one is herE: http://vanillaforums.com/plans (how is this different from the open source download which is self hosted). Free download is here: http://vanillaforums.org/download

  2. Addons. I saw this url: http://vanillaforums.org/addons, how are they different from the features found in hosted version?

  3. Mobile App: Vbulletin (sorry no puns in quoting them here) has mobile connect. Does Vanilla has any mobile add on for andriod and ios?

  4. Tapatalk.com has solutions for custom mobile apps for vanilla (http://tapatalk.com/build.php), will all of vanilla's addons (paid or free) work with them?

  5. Can we have a unified login integation with joomla and wordpress at the backend without any core hacks of any of the systems (be it joomla, wordpress or vanilla)?

you reply is much appreciated!

keep the great work up!

  • Welcome to the community!

    1. The core is shared between the hosted and OS versions. The OS core does lag behind the hosted version (OS stable is at 2.0.18.10 while hosted is at 2.2.5). There are plugins available to hosted version that are not released here. The most sought after have OS analogs though.
    2. We, the community, can only speculate on the differences between OS plugins and hosted plugins.
    3. Vanilla comes with a mobile theme that works very well out of the box across devices. Excepting adding some custom links, I use it without modification.
    4. Last I checked, Tapatalk is a native app that basically just reads the forums and lets you post back. AFAIK, it doesn't support any other applications written on Garden. Someone with Tapatalk experience could explain better.
    5. Single Sign On is accomplished through jsConnect. I have personally set up Vanilla 2.0.18.10 with WP and multiple custom sites. It has been a while since I used joomla, but it should be trivial to set up an SSO plugin using the jsConnect PHP lib (found here: https://github.com/vanillaforums/jsConnectPHP). More documentation on jsConnect is here: http://blog.vanillaforums.com/help/implementing-jsconnect-single-signon-on/
