Is there a way to search multiple (selected, not all) categories at the same time?

I'm wondering if there is a way to search multiple categories at one time, but only certain categories - not all at once. For example, if I had the following category setup:

Category A
Category B
Category C
Category D
Category E

I know there is a way to search all of those and a way to search a specific one...but if I wanted to search the following categories at the same time, is that possible?

Category A
Category D
Category E

In this instance it would not bring results back for Category B or Category C.

I think you should spend some time setting up Sphinx.

Well, technically I am wondering if it is even possible, in a sustainable, non heavy, resource-draining way - I would most likely get a plugin to be built if it is that would integrate with my site better than a general search widget. If a category list with checkboxes exists for search, then it would appear that it is possible.
