New Discussion - Blank category available as option but isn't selected by default

When creating a new discussion, the field for the "Category" is defaulted to the first valid option. This is fine as its behaviour, but then there is still an empty option at the top of the list.
Could we remove this empty option?

The category is selected based on what page you were on when you clicked on the new discussion button.
If you click it from the recent discussions page, it shouldn't have anything selected.
If you click it while viewing a specific discussion, it will use the current discussion's category.

There is no easy way of removing it and I agree that it shouldn't be like that. The proper way to take care for this is to write a plugin that changes the dropdown via JavaScript or include such a js snippet in a custom theme.
Although you would have to think what it should show instead of that blank line when you post a new discussions from the recent discussions page. Simply preselecting a random category will most probably lead to a lot of wrong posted discussions.
It has been said that the new version of Vanilla is on its way and if that PR (hint!
) makes it into the master, the blank line will be replaced with a more user friendly "Select a category" soon.
