Could Not Instantiate Mail Function

So, not really sure what to say >.<
I installed Vanilla forums (2.1.11) and I tried to set up email registration and stuff, and when I tested it out I got the error in the discussion's title. I am hosting the website myself, so there isn't really anyone I can contact for help. I also tried using Gmail's SMTP server and it still didn't work.
Here is the SMTP settings I tried.

The general response is you shouldn't use gmail as an SMTP source since they may lock your account down if too much mail gets sent.
Have you tried logging into your gmail account with SMTP credentials elsewhere?

@hgtonight
I have not, do you have any (free) services you could recommend?
I would spool up a Vanilla instance
According to https://support.google.com/a/answer/176600?hl=en, you can also try TLS on 587. Try that as well as triple checking your password.

If it does not work, you could also try hotmail, here are the details

I have no idea what this means o.0
Tried, got the same error. I checked my password in the config, it was definitely correct.
Perhaps there is a required application on my host computer that I need to install and configure?
I hate hotmail >.<
I might try it later though if I can't find any other fix.
