Do I need to install Essence to make this work?

I tried this plugin with my 2.2 install, but (as far as I can see) it doesn't work. Tried pasting several links in the discussion box, but all I can see is the link.

Do I need to install Essence to make Oembed work?

    Never mind about the Essence install question.

    But the plugin doesn't work, is it possible Essence in this plugin needs to updated or could there be another reason? If someone can point me to the right direction to look at, maybe I can try to update it (with my noob skills).
