Exxtending Search API

Hello everyone,
We are about to get started on Vanilla forums and trying to find if there is a way to extend Search API to achieve the following things
1. Ability to query multiple categories in in one query.
2. Ability to increase page size.
If there is any plugin already been done similar to this please point me in that direction.

Sphinx Search adds a "real" search indexer to Vanilla, although it is not trivial to set up. https://vanillaforums.org/addon/sphinxsearch-plugin
