Dragging 2.0.18 up to 2.3.1

We recently inherited a site that's running 2.0.18, and we Really need to get everything patched and up to date. Our goal was to go from 2.0.18 > 2.1 > 2.2 >2.3, but the first step is proving to be a problem. I've tried pulling the final 2.1 release off of github, but it seems this requires composer to run and we haven't set that up yet. I tried to instead grab the download from vanilla itself, since these seem to be configured the way I need (per https://open.vanillaforums.com/discussion/31083/vanilla-now-uses-composer). However I can only seem to acces the latest release.

I have a strong hunch I can't just grab the 2.3 release, throw it on my 2.0.18 install, and have that be that. Not quite sure how to bet approach the interim steps however. Any help would be signifigantly appreciated.
Thanks!

    Welcome to the community.

If you go to the official addon page:

    https://open.vanillaforums.com/addon/vanilla-core

there is a link to the final 2.1 version.

  • You can and should download all versions from here: https://open.vanillaforums.com/addon/vanilla-core

Look at the version history to find old packages: https://open.vanillaforums.com/addon/vanilla-core-2.1.13p1

Before you update, you should have a backup. And if you have a backup, there is no reason not to try updating to 2.3 directly.

Read every update advice and just start. There was the need to delete some files in at least one of those updates. If I would have to do such an update, I would start with a clean folder where I would put all the files from Vanilla 2.3
Afterwards I would copy over the folders conf and uploads and the .htaccess file. Then rename the root folders so that the new folder is reachable under the orums address and then start the process

  • Hallelujah! R_J's suggestion to roll with the new file worked Perfectly!

Knowing where those version downloads are is handy, too. Expected them to be in downloads, not addons. Today I learned!

Thank both of you so much for helping me get this thing patched and updated!
