We've open sourced a tool we've been working on to use Vanilla via the command line. You will need the latest version of Vanilla via GitHub (NOT 2.3).
Please note that while Vanilla remains strictly under the GNU GPLv2, we've released this library under MIT license to avoid unwanted legal interactions with any code you may create in your own environment related to automation.
