I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Okay
I am new to all ths but am wanting to learn so a message would be awesome but if ppl just help me in general I so appreciate it
So Im using Hostgator as my server
Im following online tutorials
I unzipped and uploaded Vanilla into my files and followed the videos exactly
I set up my database
When I go to my website domain it tells me I have a database error
SO then what I tried to do was I started using wordpress
That fixed it so I actually have something when I go to my domain name
I downloaded the vanilla plugin
but I dont know how to set up an account to open the forum

What am I doing wrong

at this point I am willing to pay some money for someone to do it for me (but also walk me through it)

Any advice
