Some "Add-ons" Should be part of the default Vanilla release

  • Too late. It's been done.
  • lol, with sprinkles.
  • I'm with russlipton's original idea, and can't see how anyone can object - it's the same Vanilla idea, simplicity plus options, but with a few extensions combined for anyone who wants it. I'd like it for one simple reason - I want a very basic Vanilla (I'm about to upgrade from 0.9.2.6 to v1), I hardly want any extensions, but I want to avoid clashes. If anyone was so generous as to work up the same set of extensions I want and debug any clashes, I'd be very grateful. But I guess it's unlikely two people would want the same. : ( Vanilla with sprinkles gets my vote! : )

The biggest problems with extensions is not that they clash with each other - this actually doesn't happen all that often. The big problem is that the developers create them to work on their server, with their version of PHP, and their version of MySQL.

Vanilla itself is developed to work with just about anything. That's why it took so long to release - I was making sure it worked on just about every server on the planet.

If I had built Vanilla with all of these extensions in the core, I'd still be debugging it for another year before it could be ready for prime-time.

I *do* plan on changing the add-ons site, and I *do* plan on choosing some of the more popular extensions to be highlighted or bundled for download. I will likely also offer a bundled version of Vanilla + Extensions alongside the *ahem* vanilla version of Vanilla.

But I won't be putting anything new into the core. Well, except one little treat to be released with 1.0.2. But that is a yummy secret.

Dammit. I promised myself I wouldn't post in this discussion. You guys are ANGRY!

    *hides*
  • Mark,
I should say, it goes without saying that we all accept that what you say goes.

I for one have no end of admiration for what you have created with Vanilla, this community alone is priceless.

We are not angry (a little frustrated maybe but that's not your problem) don't hide :)
  • This is what a forum is all about ---> open discussions.
  • Impressed with sprinkles--It even has an extension I uploaded last night!
  • Mark,

Thanks for commenting, I appreciate your views on this subject, and I really like the piece of software you've created. I think your option of offering a version of Vanilla for download bundled with a few if what the majority would call essential extentions is a good idea.

I differ on your stance of not adding anything to the core, but I respect your position and I'm thankful for all the work you've put into this.

I can't wait for the yummy secret.

    David.
  • Wow, I figured Mark was against bundled releases. Could have swore I even read that somewheres. I stand corrected.
  • I like the WordPress model, keep is simple stupid (KISS) plugins / extensions make it do what ever you want it to do, if you see how many plugins are available for wordpress its staggering, with extensions Vanilla can be custom to your own liking, doesn't get much better
  • Krak: you're probably thinking of this:

I won't be adding any of them to the core. Ever. I want people to be very aware of the addons site and all that is possible with Vanilla. Otherwise they'll make the mistake of thinking that the addons that come with Vanilla are all you get. Never underestimate the public's ability to remain completely oblivious of the obvious.
  • I'd like to throw my two cents in by saying if those extensions were bundled with the default install I'd be incredibly annoyed at having to go through them and delete a large majority of them. What on earth makes you think they're necessities is completely beyond me, I mean a Captcha being essential? Please!
  • For some reason I was unable to activate any extension until I installed the MetaExtension, so if anything, that should be included.
  • That's a bug, though, not a dependancy.

I never said they'd be bundled with the default install. I said they'd be available in a bundle alongside the default install.

    As in...

    Download Vanilla Now!

Also download this package of popular extensions for Vanilla!

When you get hit by hundreds or thousands of registrations by spam bots, I daresay you'll take your words back :)
  • i think it's best to start with a teaspoon of vanilla and add more as you see fit.
  • that's all you need ;-) mmm good the extensions are just sprinkles to add in the mix
