Is it possible to delete (or prevent the creation of) the automatic "This discussion was created from comments split from:" message?

    That is the discussion itself, so deleting it removes the entire split discussion.

    You can rename the System account (via Edit Account) and/or change the message (via locale, for which the code is 'This discussion was created from comments split from: %s.').
