PHP 8.0, implications for Vanilla?

I understand, from reading some detail on one previous CMS I used to use, that the implementation of PHP 8.0 is scheduled for the end of this year (Dec 2020).

Obviously this will result in some changes to the code base of many PHP driven systems, with PHP 7.x being deprecated in some areas.

I'm thinking this will have an impact on Vanilla too?

Unofficially, my guess is there is very little impact on Vanilla assuming none of the error level escalations cause a problem. The other backward compatibility breaks, if I'm recalling correctly, seemed minor and generally irrelevant. Someone will surely need to spend a few hours checking it and updating a few things, but I wouldn't anticipate it being a major speed hump.

  • Very good Linc. Thank you.
