    I discovered an enormous gain of speed if you add an extra index on the UserDiscussionWatch - Table (Discussion ID).

    you should at least be able to use i.e. phpmyadmin , then "add index" ... additionally, one should empty the ip_history table from time to time, i recently had 1 million entries, ...
