  • Wanderer, go an spout your crap on another thread if you can't actually come up with something useful to help FCK please — this is a thread about FCKeditor where various people, myself included, have tried to enhance the addon. Everyone knows that you don't like it now, so just fuck off and let us be constructive without your bile thanks.

Now where was that block user addon that gets talked about every time Wanderer opens his trap?
  • Fine if you feel like that mate, just don't ask me any questions if you don't want the answers then! You're really good at shooting the messenger. (Crap answers usually result from crap questions:-)

It's just sad to see people still trying to breath life into something like FCK when the chalk outline has all but worn away and the coroner left a long time ago and took his witches-hats with him. Sad, so sad.

  • Hi everyone, I'm having a terribly difficult time getting this working. I downloaded the fck files and uploaded them to my vanilla directory - /forum/js/fckeditor/ - i then dumped the extension files into /forum/extensions/FCKeditor/. Is there something i'm doing wrong?
  • Give this a go and let me know if it works for you. See if that makes life easier.

Also, this may be your current problem.

  • Hi, Thanks for a great plugin. A couple of questions: 1. What's the best way to integrate this plugin with Safari (i.e. ensure that it is disabled in Safari). At present, three radio buttons appear in Safari if this editor is installed, applied, and the user chooses to enable it in Forum Preferences. 2. Videos: Is there any way to get rid of the preselected videos (YouTube, Google Video, etc.)? I'd rather the values be empty until the user puts them in themselves. Thanks
  • serafino,

If you have installed everything correctly, it should auto-disable itself (something I've complained about since the release of Safari 3) and not display any buttons at all in Safari. But if you have not installed it correctly, then perhaps it will display something in Safari. But I can tell you for a fact that the author has not removed the Safari block yet, despite my begging and pleading for him to do so (so I can test it in Safari 3 Mac). Indeed, the author has not given us the time of day since July 17, 2007. Stash remains optimistic that it's either a very long holiday for the author (ha, ha) or that he will do the right thing and come back after a while (which I am highly skeptical about).

All said... Stash, serafina, Wanderer, Dinoboof, et.al: All our dialog could be in vain. If the author has abandoned this extension, it's dead until some other developer picks it up and continues work on it. So my personal concern isn't Safari compatibility now. My concern centers on the intentions of the developer of this action!
  • I have no concern at all mate, the gadget is a dud, stop wasting your time with it and look for something else if you insist on overkill for an editor. pic

  • If this Add On is abandoned, what would you recommend as an option? I can do without a WYSIWIG editor myself, but unfortunately, the users of the forum I've put together are quite accustomed to using such an editor.
  • I have HTML Formatter, installed, it works well, provides basic formatting for those who like to pretty things up a little and nobody complains. I even managed to modify it a little to allow for audio media to be included.

  • thanks for the advice, i finally got this working - the problem was i had used a lowercase folder under the /js directory. Now that that is said - is there any way to have the utility autofix code for people that don't know how to do things like properly close and image tag - lots of people write and that doesn't seem to jive with this software
  • is there any way to have the utility autofix code for people that don't know how to do things like properly close and image tag

This is taken care of automatically if you use the "add image" button form the tool bar. If people are using the code source view, then that's their look out in my opinion. If they don't know how to code, they shouldn't be using it. If you're having lts of problems just remove that button from the tool bar and tell them to use the image dialogue.
  • I'm a bit confused - so please bear with me.
When i type /* image */ (the /* and */ are just here so the html displays) it doesn't render for me either. When you say "if they don't know how to code, they shouldn't be using it" - i think that's a little harsh. There are a lot of other forums that support this "coding error" and eBay does as well.

oh yeah and is there anyway to disable the tab spacing - so many web users are used to hitting tab to move to a new field.
  • Autofixing code is irritating for people who can code however as it often does strange things (remove a line here, add one there, get rid of a space, etc.). I've never come across something that can autofix code perfectly. Present me with something that can and doesn't piss me off when I'm writing perfectly legitimate code which it then changes and I'll agree with you that it's a bit harsh to say that people who can't code shouldn't be using a mode specifically designed for people who can.

Having said that, what do you mean by the /* */ doesn't render for you?
  • Hey stash - i hear ya on the frustration thing - it's always the balance of best practices v. functionality. There is just a large amount of users who just want to show up and post images and i'm just trying to make it as easy as possible for them. When i type <img src="http://wwww.somepicture.jpg" /> on my site - it does not render properly - it just displays the link. I have to use the FCK interface it appears. I haven't had a lot of time to play around with this - so it's possible i'm just doing something incredibly "stupid". I am of course leaving out the /* */ or when posting there - it http://vintagebaseballcardforum.com btw.
  • Is this what you're talking about? Because I don't see a problem...
  • you know - i just realized that people don't know to default it to source! Is there someway to toggle this as the default? and is the lightbox plugin compatible with this? Also, is there a way to disable the "tab" feature? I would rather the tab button changed fields.
  • People are thick, no common sense, keep it simple for them, they are making a short comment for crying out loud not writing a thesis, trash the complicated editors!

  • Jeezus, you want to have it default to source, you the tab button to change fields? Why are you even bothering with a WYSIWYG editor?

Just use the default Vanilla comment box and put install the extended text editor and be done with it. Jeez.

  • I may not be an expert, but i do understand basic java, css, html, etc...etc... people who use forums like this don't have my skill set. To expect them to is unrealistic. I haven't the time nor the inclination to dig through your code to see exactly what the problem is - otherwise - i'd do it myself. No need to respond - i don't want anything else to do with this.
