i want it to look like how it looks like here on this forum. is this forum theme (vanillaforums.org) not available on the opensource download?

because i see many major differences from the downloaded one and this forum here. as a company opensourcing their forum, i'd have imagined they'd be running their own default downloadable version to showcase their product.

They aren't open sourcing their forum, they are open sourcing the code it is based on.
(And gawd bless 'em for their generosity...)
In addition to the open source option, there is their commercial, hosted version.
That is how they make their living.
@jaequery AFAIK, Vanillaforums.org is running Vanilla 2.1with a custom theme. It also uses plugins not released in the opensource version.

No just different whistles and bells. Like the reactions, but there are plugins here that do pretty much everything and is for free.
What there is not is tech support hotline. This is a community supported product.
If what you want is to clone this forum you can do so by copying the css and add the plugins available. It won't be the exact same thing but it can be close to identical.
