Does Vanilla miss-use the H1 tag?*

Hi,

I was surprised to find that Vanilla abuses, or misuses, the H1 tag. The h1 tag should contain the page title, not the site title, unless we're viewing the home page. Vanilla puts the forum logo in an h1 on every page.

Howcome SEOCompanion doesn't correct this? Does it not have access to the site head?

There are no hard and fast rules concerning the use of heading tags, even in an SEO context. That said, the default theme for 2.0.18.8 does use an h1 tag for the header logo. This is easily overwritten using a customized theme. Customized default.master files will be of particular interest to you.

Since this is a theme dependent issue, no plugin can correct this.

There are some hard and fast rules regarding h1 tags , but nothing set in stone from "google"

We setup a simple site SEO tool on a slave domain of ours to do testing. You are more than welcome to use it, but the results are generic, not 100% specific. As a rule tho, try and keep to 1 header tag ( h1 ) per page.

I forgot to mention that the baseline+ theme in 2.1b1 corrects this... error.
