Add a role, and drop another?

I have a rank set where once you get enough points, you rank up to a different role, but once the user gets that role, he still has the "member" role, is there a way to make it drop the "member" rank while going up as well?

As noted in the linked comment (thanks @R_J), there is a reason I don't currently do this.
That said, it may make sense to consider a rank progression to be "changing roles". That is, the associated role is the only role a user has. That is even simpler, and would have been easier to implement from the get go.
In the end, I want to create a system that is really flexible yet has good defaults.
