    @preregrine
    Is the documentation of vanillaforums.com valid for self-hosted sites.... I was thinking that the one on vanillaforums.org was to be referred for self hosted sites......

    short answer, it is a combination of both self-hosted related and vanillaforums hosted docs.

    this is what it says (see below). what do you intuit from the following? The way I read it it applies to both, is their a reason from the following why you think it doesn't?

    Vanilla Forums consists of both an open source project and a cloud hosting solution. The documents cover five major areas:

    • API - describes the exclusive API for cloud clients.
    • Cloud Services - for cloud-based professional services.
    • Developers - for open source developers & site owners.
    • Features - using Vanilla (covers both open source and cloud exclusives).
    • Theming - building a Vanilla theme.

    I am purely a volunteer, I do not work for vanilla forums.

    To me I just read the announcements and I follow what they state.

    e.g. "We've also rebooted our GitHub repo, docs, and more!"

    and you will probably note the Docs link points to http://docs.vanillaforums.com/

    if you have suggestions about documentation or confusion probably best to ask the vanilla staff or post your suggestions or questions on github, they can give you the best answers not me.

  • @‌peregrine - thanks for the explain..although most of it wraps me up, presently ;-).. I take my experience from WordPress which has both wordpress.com ( for hosting on their site ) and wordpress.org ( self hosting ) . The support docs there seem to be much different- for eg. plugins are not there for wordpress.com,. AFAIK. To avoid confusion the documentation should be different IMHO . Will post on github ... once I learn how to :-)

    as a another voice from the peanut galley. I totally agree with you, it might be easier to navigate and more intuitive for the end user who is self-hosting. but at the same time possibly more difficult for the developers to maintain. Also, I would venture to guess their primary business goal is get users to use their hosted site, that is where they derive their business income. So, commingling may result in more sales but may make it a bit more difficult for self-hosted users.
