I have a forum in the root of a website. That means that the url would be mysite.com and vanilla software is the only software outside of a subdirectory folder.
In the same site I have a Wordpress blog and it is in a subdirectory called mysite.com/Blog
I also have forums in subdirectories the other way around.
I have a root website using WP mysite.com/
And the subdirectory would be mysite.com/forum
Also can have yet another subdirectory mysite.com/blog
or another Vanilla forum mysite.com/forum2
It is best to have everything in subdirectories and leave the Root for a website index or intro.
@peregrine@vrijvlinder thanks for all the additional insight. I was overthinking such a simple step with the subdirectory. Last night I successfully installed vanilla to my server so I'm good to go there. Now I just need to port over my bbpress data.
I'm not sure how to create a database backup of my bbpress forums. I've resesrched on Google, but haven't found what I'm looking for.
I've read over this documentation: http://docs.vanillaforums.com/developers/importing/porter/ and it doesn't mention anything about creating a database backup, but instead an existing forum database. If I follow this info step-by-step I should be fine, right?
as I mentioned before, You will be much happier if "YOU" do not convert and start with clean non-converted database, based on your circumstances.
I would avoid the conversion and start fresh. you only have one week of data. send the users a message and ask them to create new vanilla accounts. You will be much happier. Otherwise you will have a thousand questions, about fine tuning the porter conversion.
I would try googling better if you want to know how to back up.

@peregrine Well actually I was only having an issue with understanding what 1 thing was; it may have been basic to you, but for someone who is just starting I'd say that's normal. Once I understood this 1 thing I was able to install all on my own without referencing to any videos or documentation. I can't help but feel embarrassed as you've countlessly made me feel ignorant, but nonetheless, I appreciate the insight you have provided.
Despite your ability to do it without reading the documentation or videos. It may be wiser to read the documentation anyways, despite your abilities. Most people have less issues over all, with vanilla and its feature, if they take some time to read the documentation, nonetheless, morethanless.

depending up structure
1) so if he has wordpress in its own sub-folder
/wordpress/wp-content
he could make
/wordpress
/forum
2) if he has wordpress in root folder....
/wp-content
he would make it
/wp-content
/forum
where /forum contains all folders and files from the extracted vanilla zip.
