Registration broken after upgrade to 2.6

New signups are presented with the message "The default role has not been configured."
I've managed to work out that default role settings were removed in an earlier version and I can't find any settings in my config.php about a default role. How can I set the default role and allow users to sign up?

I would assume that you have no role of type member. Check the roles in your dashboard. There you can assign types to your roles
I had this same issue after upgrading to 2.6.4 from 2.3.1. It may help others to know my solution was to locally install a fresh copy of 2.6.4 and compare all the settings for the default roles (Guest, Unconfirmed, Applicant, Member) including the default type for each role.
