Yep, a 27" iMac and a 2nd screen is a must for a decent "forum fighter jet". do not forget contracting, billing, contacting, research and so on. it can get wild, but also i have about 12 years of knowledge regarding online-commmunities and advertising, so this helps a lot. but early enough moderators and supportes are of help. But the company extends to a lot of other websites also and i always manage between 12-15 freelancers.

I've done okay, but i wont retire. I am a one man operation, but as @vrijvlinder has pointed out the niche is important. Is it something people are passionate about or are they just a bunch of lurkers? Create good content that engages. Really the best bet and what I highly recommend is that you check out this book. I have often heard that forums do not pay well especially after google imposed negative view about them.
