The generic idea are "identicons" and a quick search shows many alternatives. Here is a PHP library that can be used to generate your own: https://sourceforge.net/projects/identicons/
Recently I have dreamed of writing some kind of character creator from out of the elements this guy uses for his avatar collections.
Wouldn't it be cool to allow your users to create avatars like that?
But sadly that would be mainly a JavaScript job (after extracting the single parts from the Adobe Illustrator file) and so it will be nothing I'll be able to do

I think this would be an excellent basis for a new avatar generator.
You could also proxy the Vanillicon generator if you have some sort of privacy concern. It's a pretty "dumb" service - it doesn't care where the requests come from.

As of 2.3, you can set a global default avatar.
