The iPhone has landed....

  • I realize it is more than a phone but the fact that there is a device that small, in a pocket, that can be smashed, crushed, cracked, dropped (and/or lost without knowing it) or stolen - with that price tag, is too much for me to dive into.
  • Krak, you should really let Steve Jobs know that the iPhone will be a failure because it can be dropped or lost.

Maybe they can make it bigger with a wrist strap or a chain-to-your-leg feature!

  • Who kicked your dog? Pissed in your Cheerios perhaps?
  • We don't have Cheerios down-under and if you kicked my dog you wouldn't live to tell!

Did you read how stupid what you wrote is?

With that attitude you'd never buy anything that can be stolen or dropped and damaged.

Then again you might be suffering from some handicap in which case I apologise (stupidity is not an officially recognised handicap however).

  • ok, I'm reopening my donation drive to piss through your letterbox.

    I'm deadly serious.

oh and I ate cheerios this morning.
  • Be careful then, it's a metal one, there's sharp edges.

The price isn't as bad as it could be, most handsets are in that price range when they come out. Then again, it'll probably not drop as much in price as phones usually do. And, of course, I don't know what they'll cost over in Europe when they come out, considering that they are going for $500 in the US, and how Apple usually does things, they'll probably go for a good $700 in Europe.
  • $700 is still only £350 though. And the Nokia N95 is a '£500' phone, so in theory the iPhone is cheaper...
  • Yeah, normal phones drop sharply in price after a while though, I wonder if the iPhone will...
  • haha. Way to get me told off by my boss for laughing at work while not working!
  • Well there's some nice rumours of a second generation iPhone with 3G for Europe. Sounds more promising. If they can add in GPS and up the camera quality then we're talking. I can live with 8gig of space on my phone, just use it for a couple of TV programs and the photos. Stick to my iPod for music. If it's Q4 of this year then it's even better as that's when my contract is up for renewal. Of course, I haven't paid for a phone for years and I don't really want to start now. I guess I'll wait and see. I'm a bit confused why they're releasing it without the ability to use any of your music as a ringtone. That's very strange.

If iPods are an indicator, the more expensive models typically drop by $50 or $100, but this usually only happens just around the time a better model is introduced.

And on some occasions, Apple will discontinue a model and stop selling it altogether when a better model comes out. They just stopped selling the iPod mini the same day they started selling the iPod nano, and the iPod mini was actually their top-seller when they did that.

@giginger: Most people don't know this, but you can use iTunes to create your own ringtones. The tricky part of ring tones is that you typically have to pick a 30-second clip where in the song sounds catchy enough. You can splice it on iTunes, but I'm not sure how you would splice a 30-second clip smoothly on an iPhone. Perhaps they're working on it.

The other problem with music as ringtones is that if you're actually listening to music on your iPhone (since it's part iPod), and the ringtone goes off while you're listening to music, you might not realize that there's a call. And, there's like a 1 in 1000 chance that the song you're currently listening to is the same one as your ringtone. So, I'm thinking that using songs as ringtones is likely a poor user experience for an iPhone.

    Good link here:

I'm hoping they allow you to sync your phone over WiFi.
If not then that's something that should be added in an update.

@dan39: I didn't know that but then I never tried to cut up a song in iTunes. I just use the whole track. I currently have Wonder woman which works fantastically with that opening. ::Boooooom de de de de de de de *piano glissando* dum dum dum dum dum WONDER WOMAAAAAAAAAAN!::
Whole train probably thinks I'm gay :D

The only thing missing is "Shame the N95 is about a tenth as sexy as the iPhone and the interface is nowhere near as awesome". Apart from that. Spot on.

Never mind that the N95 looks a piece of crap and you have to navigate through clunky menus with a clicker.

"The future of ugliness is already here - N95"

    Sign me up.
  • Were you just insulting gigingers post with a comment he actually made himself? That's cool. For the record I dont think the N95 is particularly ugly by many standards. Granted it's not as pretty as the iPhone but what is?

Actually, I was insulting the extremely large image thingy. Not giginger. (sorry for not making that more clear) I think it's also funny how everyone's jumping up and down saying the iPhone only does this and doesn't do that. The iPhone clearly doesn't do "everything" -- and nor should it on version 1.0. Perhaps the reason why everyone's going crazy over the iPhone is that it appears to be the first phone on this planet that's actually simple and a pleasure to use. You'd think the geniuses at Nokia and Sony Ericsson would have figured out how to do that after making phones for so long. Go figure. But, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that making a sleek and extremely user-friendly phone is a lot harder that it looks. Certainly if were easy, it would have been done years ago.
  • The thing is, a lot of the feature requests for the iPhone which people keep coming up with wouldnt actually affect the interface or usability that much...it's just improvements on features it already has which put the icing on the cake so to speak. The reason everyone's going crazy over the iPhone is because it's been released by apple.
