  • Stash XDA Orbit is not a smartphone. its a pda. pdas have a different set of apps than smartphones
  • So is a 'smartphone' anything running that crappy mobile windows OS? Cause i'm pretty sure things like XDA's (with touch screens) are aimed at different audiences than the 'smartphones' without touchscreens. And I'd also say that the iPhone was aiming to compete with the touch-screen touting market.
Someone clear something up for me though...do blackberrys have touchscreens?
  • edited February 2007
Blackberries don't have touchscreens, they use their own OS in the Windows department Smartphones use Windows Mobile Standard version PDA's use Windows Mobile Professional version they are not compatible with each other, they require different apps.
  • Well I'd say if you're calling the XDA a PDA then that's the iPhones target market...
  • iphone is a smartphone. not a pda with phone capability, thats what XDA is iphone does look like a pda, but doesn't work like one, it works like a smartphone
  • Well it aught to work like a PDA.
  • Smartphone/PDA. Personally I don't care about the difference. The XDA makes phone calls like a phone and can edit documents and sync my contacts and calendar with my PC/Mac. In my book this is exactly the kind of market the iPhone's targeting. Obviously the iPhone looks a helluva lot nicer, but then I pay nothing over my standard line rental for my XDA and it has a SatNav addon for a mere £50, so I'm not about to complain :)
  • The iPhone can't really be fairly judged or commented on yet since it is not officially released and I know for a fact that the feature set is not yet complete, at least we have not seen it all, especially any feature tied to new functionality in Leopard. All the critics I've read and listened to, both pro and con agree on this point, as a result they seem reluctant to comment in any depth. Except for the anti-Apple brigade of course, as usual they are throwing punches well before the contest has started.

It is also accepted that Steve Jobs was probably forced to introduce it early because the approval process by the Federal Communications Commission would surely have resulted in leaks, errant reports and other goofball statements.

As to whether it's a PDA, a SmartPhone or anything else, I think you'll find that when you get it in your hot little hands it will be in a category all of its own.

it's not about whether u care about the difference or not. point is there IS a difference between the two.
same thing with tablets and UMPC devices they are for different markets even thought they look the same.

    Smartphones are voice centric devices.
    PDA's are data centric devices

they are for different type of consumers. even though they might do the same things.

...and the iPhone (with all of the above as well as unprecedented media capabilities) is in a category all its own!

  • it was one crappy TV ad
    it had no branding whatsoever
    Where is the iphone brand.
  • It wasn't an ad per se, it was a teaser played during the Oscars night.
Not meant to be an ad, just something to start conversation and interest.
The iPhone brand was there, you just had to be quick.

  • You said it.
I wonder if it will be brown?

  • I imagine their Zunephone will be a media/fun focused operating system for phones that is aimed at the youth/leisure market. Could blow the iphone away if thats the case. Cheap phones that play nicely with windows could do a lot of damage to the iphones market share.
  • adrian,
ur taking products from two totally different markets and comparing them:S
