If you would like an option for your users to choose from a list of pictures, you will have to write a full blown plugin and I think it might be not the easiest one to write.
But I do not think that this is very important feature while testing a forum.
@R_J: I already have it working though. =P I'm displaying a list of pictures, the onclick of which's images sends an AJAX request to a barebones plugin based on @hgtonight's Testing Ground, which in turn sets the users' photo.
