I've been using the Gig Calendar for event/birthday reminders, but editing it is such a kludge that I never do it & people's birthdays go by w/o a peep.
FWIW, it is really easy to include a google calendar in your vanilla install.
I think the Janine approach (using ping/XML-RPC to initiate an update) is an extremely smart way to implement new functionality that *could* be used for multiple 'platforms' (blogging or otherwise)
If I get some time, I plan on extending the concept of the GigCalendar and port a WP plugin I'm currently using called Countdown. I think it will meet a lot of needs.
@ [-Stash-]: perhaps I don't understand the concept completely, but wouldn't one need to start a blog to use Janine? Seems like overkill just to be able to link to an event...
