edited August 2009 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8
Is there a list of websites who uses Vanilla? I want to see how Vanilla has been implemented by users.

Thanks!

Skate One (Powell Skateboards) has a fairly high-profile Vanilla forum:

    http://www.skateone.com/forum/

Powell is one of the largest & longest-lived skateboard equipment manufacturers; it has existed since 1976.

I use Vanilla for a private discussion forum for a non-profit (not public).

I also have a beta Vanilla site I use for a bike maintenance advice site:
    http://veloguru.com/

One thing I notice is that people don't tend to dig in and radically change the appearance. I see this trend on vBulletin forums a lot too, though. They play with the color scheme and call it a day. One of my challenges is going to be to make the homepage more inviting. I really like the usability of it, but I worry the discussion list looks too cold and I want people to see my community as very inviting even at first blush.

Also, I think the makezine forum is one of the largest I've seen so far, with ~4,000 discussions. The forum I'm looking to migrate is approaching 76,000 discussions so I'll be keenly interested in how the findability of discussions scales and how easy it is to keep track of discussions when we have more active threads in a day than appear on the homepage. Some interesting challenges but I'm not overly worried about them.

I'm going to take some of the usability lessons I've taken from the V2 default and create a new design from scatch, and then craft the theme with any necessary plugins to match the vision rather than incrementally inching away from the default. Really excited about the possibilities.
  • i will be implementing vanilla into my websites shortly :) just looking through the code first and testing a few features :)
  • I did this board, and belive it or not, is vanilla: http://www.transmision.ws
    Warning: still buggy

    Here's another, heavily customised: http://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/

And here's a better search to bring up Vanilla 1 forums:

Nice example, @matt. I dig the left-side postbit and category pixel art.

    Here's another one: http://thisfrenchforum.com/

I contacted the site owner a couple of months ago for installation help but that was before Vanilla Forums allowed us to host forums with them.
  • My site is stripped down in terms of design but handles 14,600 discussions / 195,805 comments on a Joyent Accelerator just fine: http://www.dumpoff.com
  • I run the ELCaD Business Network at http://www.elcad-ent.co.uk and the forum there is Vanilla, with the main site being elgg.
The site is relatively new in its current form so the number of discussions is minimal, but I have high hopes for it.
Please check it out and comment. Also, feel free to sign up to promote your own site.
  • I run a discussion site about tabletop roleplaying games called "Story Games". It's got about 10,300+ discussions and 2300 members (unknown how many are inactive, etc). I keep things running at about 100 conversation topics/page, so that causes a little load over the 30-50 topics/page sites, but overall I've had a lot of success with Vanilla over the past three years:

    http://www.story-games.com

You'll note that I use Jazzman as the default skin, because personally I think it's the best for reading and discussion. Also:

    >> One thing I notice is that people don't tend to dig in and radically change the appearance.

I'm not a programmer, unfortunately, nor am I very skilled with CSS, so I have to rely on others to do that groundwork. A few years ago, though, I held a New Theme/New Style contest on these forums to encourage people to create new content for the community, it worked out pretty well (but now I just noticed that the addon area is no longer searchable by Style, so it's quite impossible to find them for Vanilla 1.x these days). If I had the time and skill to change the forums radically... well, honestly, I'd probably keep things right the way they are. I chose Vanilla as a lark/experiment, and stuck with it because of the layout, the format, the whispers and the application required aspects: They were really condusive to internet discussions.

I also have a smaller "group blog" site that runs Vanilla as a backbone, another tabletop RPG discussion group that focuses on games from Japan: http://www.j-rpg.com . From the outside, it looks like a blog. From the user-side, there are a lot of hidden "Workshop" style threads with private discussions, collaborations and the like.
