i'm dumbfounded as to what may be causing this. three days ago i modified the cookie domain to read .homebrewforums.net so users wouldn't get logged out when switching between www and non-www paths. later that day this started happening. I cleared the cookie domain field and everything was fine for the last couple days... until i logged on from my laptop today.
When i hit the post comment button, instead of posting a comment, it just adds a new message form comments form div. What is going on?

why do bad things happen to good people?
in this question, i'm the good people. it's rhetorical, so it doesn't have to be true.

it's happening on mobile too. so it's not isolated to the theme.

and it's happening on private messages (conversations) not just discussions

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the reason the number of people posting on my forum just went from 6 to 0 in the last 15 minutes is because this issue is no longer isolated to me.

and to make things even more interesting... i just logged into one of my test instances (a totally vanilla setup of 2.0.18.8, in a subdomain virtual host on the same webserver) and it is exhibiting the same symptoms, so it has to have something to do with either
a) my webserver
b) my network
c) my dns
d) sun spots or aurora borealis

nothing weird with dns that i can see. tracert shows the correct one hop from my laptop to the router in the front room, which proxies for the web server.

The only thing I can think of is replicate it locally. Since you're probably having a local server try approach the site through localhost?
Can you revert back to the default theme on that test site? Buttonbar? HTML format?
I need the regulars to help too here, have no PC to reproduce
There was an error rendering this rich post.
i should say, port forwards, not proxies. it's not a proxy server.

test site is using default theme, almost no plugins activated - only a test environment for Diego's Badges and Reactions application (which is not running on the live server)
unfortunately, i cant use local host, since the virtual host configuration of apache relies on the hostname to determine what virtual web you are requesting. There is no default binding, and i host a few domains.

I'm getting nowhere on this. I am completely and utterly stumped. The post javascript is not generating the correct URL for the request. why? what is going on?
It happens on a test site, which i literally just deleted everything except my config.php and one plugin, then re-installed vanilla into. it happens on mobile and on my laptop, so it's not browser specific. The issue manifested itself as intermittent originally, but is now persistent and reproducible. the only common thread is the server, the network and the apache service.
im getting down to the wire here. I need some words of encouragement / guidance or i'm going to pull the plug on vanilla and transition to one of the other platforms i have on test servers. That's obviously not something i want to do.. it would be a huge ordeal and i would loose more than 3 years of work and more than a quarter million posts, not to mention the hit on search and all of that..... but if people cant access my site and comment on it, it's worthless.

@hbf: Just tried to register to your test installation in order to test if that is a general problem on your site or only your local pcs problem.
